Chalk-Streams First is a new initiative aimed at wholesale cessation of abstraction across the breadth of the Chilterns chalk-streams. It is based on the idea that for every unit not abstracted from the aquifer in the headwaters circa 80% of that unit will be available for surface water abstraction in the lower catchments of the Rivers Colne and Lea. A pipeline in Affinity water’s management plan called SUPPLY 2040 could then be utilised to take water from the Thames reservoirs to the towns currently supplied by chalk aquifer water.
It is a simple and pragmatic solution to the environmental crisis of chronic low flows in our precious and globally unique chalk-streams.
